Texture is the visual interpretation of the surface characteristics of objects which is why it plays such an important role in nearly all successful pictures. Because touch is so much a part of our everyday experience, strong texture in pictures helps to form part of the two-dimensional illusion of reality that is photography.
The appearance of texture is dependent on the angle of light striking the surface. Low light will illuminate high points, casting shadows into dips and hollows to allow the real texture of surfaces to be seen.
The best tip for producing high quality texture images is to zoom into objects to enlarge texture beyond normal recognition
