A fictional self-portrait is basically a self-portrait that is untrue. It could be someone dressing up in a costume or experimenting with cosplay. One photographer who uses fictional self-portraits in her work is Cindy Sherman, an American photographer who uses herself to make statements about cultural and gender stereotypes. Always in elaborate costumes, wigs, and makeup, Sherman has produced series in which she dresses as women from history paintings, fashion and more. Cindy Sherman and fictional self-portraits were my inspiration for the images below. Each of my photographs follows the theme because I have used costumes and makeup to alter my appearance. My favorite image above is the first one of me dressed like an old woman. The overall lighting and tone of this image helps to make it cohesive. I like the angle of my face and the different lines in the glasses and wrinkles that help to move my eye around the composition. I wanted this to look like a selfie gone bad from an older woman. The squinty eyes and confused look help to get this idea across. I think this is a successful image because it makes me laugh and it does remind me of an older woman trying to figure out how to take a selfie. I also think the composition is focused and not distracting.
